It sounds like the computer isn’t aware of the adapter. Right click “My Computer” and select “Manage”. Select Device Manager and look for your wireless adapter. If it has a warning, delete the drivers, restart the computer, and put the drives back in.
The reviews of the xirrus software are all pretty positive.
