Unix Commands Connecting To Wireless Router?

I am running backtrack 3 which is a slackware version i think.. Anyway when i do an “iwlist” i see my router and sid and all that. Now what how do i connect to the wireless router. I have tried this
ifconfig ap “essid”
dhcpd -t -d
Not working. I dont know its a simple question i am just a noob that is all…

    Is there any encryption key enabled or possible WPA?
    Look into the iwconfig command
