I know that i’ve always appreciated being able to pick up a free signal when i’m in different places with my wireless laptop so i don’t really see the need to put a security key on my paid connection. but i’d like to know the risks. can hackers view my online activity somehow? can they change my routers settings? if others use it will it slow my connection?

The answer to all three of your questions is yes. Your internet is just another piece of your property you control, with the method of entry being your wireless router. If you don’t change the password to change the router settings as well as setting a password to connect to the router, you are at significantly more risk than if you do so.
Think of another piece of property you own: your house (or apartment or equivalent living quarters) and the method of entry being your doors. You wouldn’t leave them unsecured, so why is your internet/wireless router any different?

as long as you are not sending any secure information you can have it free, but if you plan to logonto your bank or credit card sites or buy stuff online then i suggest to have a secure wireless router as well a firewall. else its your luck.
